Every season during the contest window, there are “blackout dates” for the competition — days that the competition just cannot happen.
While the Christmas and New Year holidays often bring swell, the holidays have a major impact on staffing for law enforcement and local agencies (Sheriff, Fire, Parks, CHP, Harbor District, etc.). Therefore, they have blacked out the dates of December 18 through January 1.
Below is the full list of blackout dates for the competition:
- 21-26 Dec 2012
- 28 Dec 2012-1 Jan 2013
- 22 Jan-1 Feb 2012
- 10-13 Feb 2013
- 27-28 Feb 2013
- 16-18 Mar 2013
- 27-29 Mar 2013
These blackout dates are nothing new, but they do add another level of complexity to making the call for the right day to hold the contest.
So, while the swell might be good, there are other factors in making “the call” for a successful event on and off the water.
